Welcome to Effingham, Illinois.
Effingham is located in south central Illinois in Effingham County (of which it is the county seat) about 50 miles south-southeast of Decatur at the Interstate 57/Interstate 70 interchange. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,384. .
Area recreation includes trips to Newton Lake and Newton Lake SFWA about 15 miles to the southeast, Sam Parr State Park about 20 miles to the east-southeast and Fox Ridge State Park located 30 miles northeast of town.
The Cross Foundation completed a 198 foot Cross at the intersection of Interstates 57 & 70 in Effingham, Illinois. The cross itself is made in four sections, and covered with a steel skin (sort of like a very elaborate Morton building). It's surrounded by little benches and monuments for the 10 commandments, always open, as a stop for truckers and travelers along Hwys. 70 and 57 (hence, the Cross at the Crossroads...)
Effingham is the home of the world's largest cross.
The 1,775-acre Newton Lake was created by an impoundment in 1976 and shortly thereafter was stocked with an assortment of bass. The lake is said to produce some of the largest bass in the state. It currently has an 18" minimum length for harvesting and a 3-fish limit, the 780-acre Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area hosts a variety of wildlife, including two Illinois endangered species, the prairie chicken and the river otter.
Take a stroll down a street in Effingham and chances are you will find works of art displayed in a variety of ways. From Sculpture on the Avenues to murals on the sides of buildings to 19th Century architecture, the city of Effingham brings art to the public. This approach to art allows visitors and locals to take a close look from several perspectives and invites one to experience the art through touch as well as sight.
Effingham has a tradition of innovation and independent thought. Stop by the courthouse to view the Lord Effingham Marker. This nobleman made history when he refused to fight against the colonists in the American Revolution.
Make sure to stop by the MY Corvette Museum for a different kind of art. This display of classic Corvette memorabilia will get your motor running and may possibly inspire an abandonment of your everyday life for the free spirit of the American roads.
